Esquisse 4_Understanding Form

Approaching closer to the Final Product, the Task 4's aim to create a seat that will support the weight of one person really provides more understandings for cardboard usage to me, same material yet more experiments.

As first I and my teammate started with own sketches to explore different type of seats and forms we wanted to create. Then coming the locking types that could be achieved. Triangle form was possibly the best option we went for.

Along the way of process development, we moved on with some 1:4 scale mock-ups and experiments on how forming shapes can be locked into.

Learning from different trials, the locking system was achieved by 2 opposite piece being locked to each other. Apparently once locked it all formed a spiral shape on the top and the bottom side was secure by slotting another long piece of cardboard in between every slice. The great part of this stool was also the pattern that helps to soften the look. Following is our result of the stool we made:

Esquisse 3_Locking System

As getting more and more challenging, the requirement of Task 3 is to create a 'weight bearing structure" that possibly holding up to 100 kilograms. I was getting excited pretty fast once starting with some miniature prototypes.

The first attempt was a typical cube that is fully enclosed all sides and only used a single piece of cardboard to form the structure. But I was not very satisfied with the product since my intention was to go for something workable but still light-weight. And here is my solutions:

Interlock systems I used to create more strength for the cardboard and ensures its stability when standing on.

Final Outcome & Actual Testing

My product was quite strong enough to hold up to 2 persons (I guess) as I made full use of all the cardboard I have. I have learned from this practice to explore and resolve the weakness of some interlock systems effectively.
